Last month, the Patrick Street Interiors’ blog explored the world of soft window treatments (if you haven’t checked out our post—take a look!). For this month, we are rounding out our window treatment design series by exploring hard window treatments.

What exactly is a hard window treatment? Hard window treatments, also known as window coverings, blinds, shutters or roller shades, are made of more rigid materials such as wood, faux wood, metal, vinyl, or heavier fabrics. Additionally, hard window treatments are typically factory-made and affixed over top of a window. However, don’t confuse factory-made with lacking design. There are many customizable options that let our clients achieve their desired styles, while adding the practical  and cutting edge benefits of hard window treatments.

Light Control

Roller shades allow you to control the amount of natural light entering your space, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

Privacy

With adjustable slats or louvers, you can maintain privacy without sacrificing natural light. By tilting the slats to your desired angle, you can prevent a passerby from seeing into your home, without having to sacrifice incredible views or natural light.

Insulation

Hard window treatments add an extra layer of insulation, which helps keep rooms cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Not only does this help you live more comfortably, it can lead to energy savings.

By choosing a versatile window covering, such as these up-down treatments from our vendor, Hunter Douglas, you are able to balance privacy and light control throughout the day.

Durability

Hard window treatments are built to last, with sturdy materials that will withstand everyday wear and tear, especially in high traffic areas, such as kitchens or bathrooms. They are easy to clean, which makes them a reliable choice for many of our residential and commercial clients.

Innovation and Safety

Whether it be for style or safety, high-tech window coverings are making their way into homes. Winning an innovation award in 2023, Hunter Douglas’ Aura Illuminated Shades provide controlled light, no matter the weather, season or time of day.

Additionally, window covering manufacturers will soon be required by law to enhance the safety of corded window coverings by either designing cordless or hidden cord blinds, or remote-controlled products. Known as “silent death,” window treatment cords pose a strangulation risk for children and pets. If you have not considered updating your window coverings, we cannot recommend these options enough for our clients, especially when their home is a space shared with children, grandchildren or four-legged friends.

Like soft window treatments, hard window treatments are an investment in your space. At Patrick Street Interiors, we are experts in guiding our clients through the design process by helping them to consider the functionality and style they desire. We believe window treatments should add to, not take away from your space. We help our clients take precise measurements of windows before purchasing window treatments to ensure a perfect fit and can provide guidance on installation or referrals to our trusted installers.
